  1. فـ Fa · f at the start f as in fish · IPA [f]
  2. ـر Ra · r at the end · does not connect to the left rolled r · IPA [r]
  3. ح Ha · ḥ standing alone · does not connect to the left strongly breathed h from the throat · IPA [ħ]

The name is split into separate blocks (2). A gap opens after: ر (Ra) — these letters do not connect to the next one. The gap is correct, not a mistake.

Dots in total: 1. They sit on: ف (Fa). Each dot has to stay clearly separate from its letter — in a tattoo, a dot inked too small or too close is what turns one letter into another.

Look-alikes to watch for — these letters share the same body and differ only in their dots:

How small can “Farah” be? Size & script style

We rendered “Farah” (فرح) in six script styles and measured where letters nearly touch and how thin the finest strokes are. That gives a minimum size at which nothing runs together – useful for tattoos, engraving or print.

Style Minimum height Minimum width
Ruqʿa (Aref Ruqaa) most robust
Diwani-inspired (Aref Ruqaa Ink)
Thuluth-inspired (Katibeh)
Bold Kufi (Reem Kufi Bold)
Naskh (Amiri)
Bold Naskh (Amiri Bold)

Guide values, not a guarantee: the numbers come from the geometry of the letterforms and the assumptions you can change above (defaults 0.6 mm line and 1.0 mm gap – these are our assumptions, not verified standards). Skin, needle, material and method differ; the final size is for your tattoo artist or workshop to decide. Ruqaa and Diwani share the same skeleton and often score alike. Height and width refer to the whole name including dots and descenders.

How does “Farah” age on skin? An illustration

Ink spreads a little over the years and fine gaps close up. On the left you see the fresh lettering, on the right how it might look with the chosen ink spread. Important: this is an illustration based on our own, unverified assumption (0.1 mm spread per decade) – real skin, ink and technique differ.

How your text can work as a tattoo

Your text is short — a bold, geometric style works best here: it stays clearly readable even on a small area. Reem Kufi Bold is marked for that reason.

Your screen renders every size perfectly crisp — real ink on skin does not. Fine lines and tight gaps between letters blur as a tattoo heals and ages. The smaller the planned area, the bolder and more geometric the style you should pick.

Naskh (Amiri)

Works for most sizes and placements

فرح

The all-rounder: balanced stroke weight, clearly separated letterforms, the typeface used for running text for centuries. Holds up well at medium and even smaller sizes.

Bold Naskh (Amiri Bold)

Good for forearm, neck, medium sizes

فرح

Thicker strokes than classic Naskh, giving higher contrast and a calmer overall shape. A good choice when the text should still read clearly from some distance.

Ruqʿa (Aref Ruqaa)

Only recommended for larger areas

فرح

Everyday handwriting: playful, flowing, with soft curves. Feels personal and relaxed — but the thinner strokes need more room to stay crisp as the tattoo heals.

Kufi (Reem Kufi)

Very good for small to medium areas

فرح

Geometric, angular, without curves — the oldest style of Arabic script. The clean shapes forgive blur especially well.

Recommended for your text

Bold Kufi (Reem Kufi Bold)

Best choice for very small areas

فرح

The heaviest option here: very thick, geometric strokes. On the smallest areas — a wrist or a finger — this keeps the most of the letterform intact.

Manuscript Naskh (Scheherazade)

For larger, calm areas with height

فرح

An ornamental style close to classical Qur'anic manuscripts, with pronounced ascenders and descenders. Needs more vertical space than the other styles.

Diwani-inspired (Aref Ruqaa Ink)

Larger areas only, because of the fine loops

فرح

A dense, heavily looped cursive in the spirit of the Ottoman Diwani tradition: letters merge into one another, the line reads as a single unbroken sweep. Honesty note: this font is a decorative approximation for preview purposes, not a calligraphically exact Diwani reproduction — that only comes from a trained calligrapher's hand.

Thuluth-inspired (Katibeh)

Needs noticeably more height than the other styles

فرح

A bold, tall-proportioned style with steep upstrokes, echoing the monumental Thuluth inscriptions seen on mosques. Honesty note: this too is a decorative approximation, not a substitute for hand-lettered classical Thuluth — for that, a calligrapher is the right choice.

Before you take this to your appointment

Don't just show your artist a photo of the screen — show them the actual planned size too, ideally printed at real scale. Ask directly whether they have experience with Arabic script: letter connections that shift slightly during tattooing are easier to catch for someone who has done it before. And if possible, test a design as henna first — that shows you on your own skin whether the size and style really work.
