Henna: natural, safe, properly cared for
Before the paste goes on: what makes henna pure, why "black henna" is a risk, and how to keep a design bold for as long as possible.
Spotting pure henna
- Fresh paste is olive-green to brown, never jet black
- Smells earthy and plant-like, not chemical or like paint
- Stains orange-brown right after application and only darkens over days
- Short ingredient list: henna powder, an acid (e.g. lemon), an essential oil — no unknown additives
Be careful with "black henna"
"Black henna" stains jet black instantly and often lasts for weeks — pure henna simply cannot do that. The usual reason is para-phenylenediamine (PPD), a hair-dye chemical that can cause severe allergic reactions, blistering and scarring on skin, sometimes only days later. If you notice redness, itching, blistering or swelling after a henna application, see a doctor promptly.
Timing and how the colour develops
- Leave the paste on for 2 to 6 hours — the longer, the bolder the colour
- Right after scraping it off the stain looks orange — that is normal
- The final, darkest colour only shows after 24 to 48 hours
- Warmth while the paste sits (warm socks, a scarf) deepens the colour further
How long it lasts and aftercare
- Avoid water on the area for the first few hours after removing the paste
- Apply an oil regularly (olive oil or a dedicated henna aftercare oil)
- Exfoliating, saunas and long baths fade the colour faster
- Direct sun also fades henna faster than shaded skin
- Lasts about 1 to 3 weeks depending on aftercare and where it is
Day-by-day care
- Day 0 · Leave the paste on for 4 to 8 hours, do not wash it off. Dabbing on a sugar-lemon mix keeps it moist.
- Day 1 · Scrape the paste off, no water. The colour is still light orange. Apply a thin layer of oil.
- Day 2–3 · The colour darkens to reddish brown, usually strongest now. Showering is fine; keep the area wet only briefly and pat dry.
- Day 4–7 · Keep oiling, avoid rubbing and scrubs. The colour starts to loosen.
- Day 8–14 · The design fades and almost disappears. This is normal.
Rough guide: skin, henna quality and body area change the course. Palms and soles usually stain darker and last longer.
Planning bridal henna
- Book a trial a few weeks ahead: settle design, timing and skin reaction.
- Have it applied 1 to 3 days before the celebration so the colour reaches its peak.
- Insist on pure natural henna without PPD and ask for the ingredients.
- Choose matching hand and foot designs and show them to your artist beforehand.

Frequently asked questions
Can henna cause an allergic reaction?
Pure, unadulterated henna very rarely causes reactions. The large majority of serious reactions trace back to PPD mixed into "black henna". If you have known skin allergies, patch-test a small area first and see a doctor if in doubt.
How long does a henna design last?
Typically 1 to 3 weeks, depending on where it is, aftercare, and how often the area meets water or soap. Palms and soles usually hold longer than other areas.
Does henna stain clothes or light surfaces?
Fresh paste can leave stains that are hard to remove. Put a cloth underneath and touch the area as little as possible until the paste has dried.
When should bridal henna be applied?
Many brides have henna done one to three days before the celebration: the colour usually peaks after 24 to 48 hours. Allow 3 to 6 hours for the application of full designs plus the setting time, and book a trial session beforehand.
What do I do in the first 24 hours after henna?
Leave the paste on as long as possible (at least 4 to 6 hours), then scrape it off instead of washing it, and keep the area dry for the first hours. A thin film of oil protects it and keeps the colour stronger.
