Changelog

Every version of this site at a glance — what is new, what was fixed, what got better.

Entries are maintained in German and English; other languages show the English version here.

v63
  • Fix: multi-word names (“Ammar wa amal”) are now transliterated word by word, the lexicon wins per word (before, the whole phrase went to the engine: “أمر و عمل”). Ring studio: for an unverified spelling the ring now shows the same live result as the field above it.
v62
  • Ring studio: “ring size / circumference” fields aligned (hint below both fields), placeholder per language.
v61
  • Ring studio: live suggestions as on the names and type pages – the Arabic spelling appears on the ring as you type, tapping a word offers other spellings. “Check & sizes” loads the verified spelling with its minimum size.
v60
  • Ring studio: select fields no longer clipped (shorter labels), aligned fields, single column on small phones, style comparison scrolls sideways. Checked at 320, 390, 768 and 1280 px width without horizontal overflow.
v59
  • Ring studio: text in Latin (or other) script with its own script styles; buttons “عربي” and “Name in Latin letters”; share image with the note “created with arabic-letters.com/ring”.
  • New on the ad-free tool pages (ring, type, decompose, couple, photo): share bar with WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, X, Pinterest, Reddit, LinkedIn, e-mail, copy link. Plain links only, no third-party script, no tracking. Ad pages and ad code unchanged.
v58
  • Lexicon: Ammar/Amar/Ammaar → عمار (the engine used to return “أمر” = “command”). Ring studio: other possible spellings as clickable suggestions (when the engine provides them), tip for editing by hand, link to the name page.
v57
  • Ring studio: ring can be turned in every direction (drag = rotate and tilt, double-click = reset, Ctrl + wheel or +/− = zoom), view buttons side/angled/from above, inside of the ring visible (inside engraving is shown there). Select fields no longer clipped.
v56
  • New: ring & engraving studio (/ring, German/English only, ad-free): see your Arabic name as a rotating ring, set ring size, band width, script style and engraving side, check the minimum size against our measurement data, download a 600 dpi PNG template or print 1:1 for a paper-strip test.
  • Everything runs in the browser, nothing is uploaded. Minimum sizes apply only to verified names and under adjustable, unverified assumptions. Ad code, consent and ads.txt are unchanged.
v55
  • Spanish, French, Indonesian and Italian (the languages with the most search visitors): texts that used to fall back to English on name and letter pages are now translated — tattoo styles, notes before the appointment, name meanings and origin, similar names, camera texts, FAQs.
  • Name page titles now include the Arabic spelling and the question form for verified names (“How to write … in Arabic”, “Cómo se escribe … en árabe”). The advertising and consent files are unchanged.
v54
  • The verified name lexicon grows by 56 common Arabic names (including Yasin, Ismail, Ayman, Osama, Aya, Asma, Hajar, Nada, Yara). They now get the verified spelling, the size check, the aging test and the name anatomy.
  • The size measurement was extended to the new names using the same method as for the existing ones (6 script styles).
v53
  • Important fix: the verified name lexicon now takes precedence over the external transliteration engine. Previously the engine could return a wrong spelling as “common” for lexicon names (example: “Iman” showed “اما” instead of “إيمان”).
  • On name and couple pages only names from the lexicon count as “verified”; engine suggestions are marked as approximations. The compliance check now tests this case on the live site.
v52
  • New: “Aging test” on all name pages (de/en): set style, height and ink spread; fresh on the left, after N years on the right. Plus a calculation of when the narrowest gap would close.
  • Explicitly an illustration with our own unverified assumption (0.1 mm spread per decade, adjustable). Runs in the browser via an SVG filter, nothing is sent. Ad code unchanged.
v51
  • Letter pages: new “The letter in detail” section built from real data – place in the alphabet, abjad value, dots (number and position), joining behaviour, occurrence in the verified name spellings and tattoo hints (de/en). It sits above the ad slot; the ad code is unchanged.
  • Notice line adjusted: “This site may contain advertising; product links to Amazon are affiliate links.” (all 13 languages) – accurate on ad-free pages too.
v50
  • New: “About & methodology” page (/about): purpose, operator, how the check and size check work, sources, funding, limits, contact for corrections. Linked in the footer, ad-free, in the sitemap (de/en).
  • Other languages redirect to the English version. Ad code unchanged.
v49
  • Legal texts revised to the best of our knowledge (not legal advice): imprint without the discontinued EU dispute-resolution platform, § 18(2) MStV notice, health and size disclaimer, copyright.
  • Privacy: new section on the size check and data sheet, added notes on objection and complaint rights. Ad code unchanged.
v48
  • Interactive data sheet: choose the script style, enter the desired height in cm (instant “Fits / Too small”), adjustable line and gap assumptions, body area and note for the studio.
  • Actual-size trial print (true to scale when printed at 100 %). Inputs stay in the browser; nothing is stored or sent. Ad code unchanged.
v47
  • New: print-ready data sheet for the tattoo or engraving studio (/datasheet/NAME): large name, three script suggestions with minimum size, letter table with dots and joins, checklist (incl. do not mirror). Reachable from the “Size & script style” section on name pages (de/en).
  • Tool page without ads and with noindex; ad code unchanged.
v46
  • Removed: “A second opinion from a person” (menu item, page, notes on the home, result, name, couple and photo pages, sitemap). The check stays pure self-service.
  • The old address /review now permanently redirects to “Common mistakes”.
  • Privacy policy and photo notes (13 languages) adjusted accordingly. Ad code unchanged.
v45
  • Size section: “Before you commit” note – a tattoo is permanent; try it temporarily first (photo editor, stencil, natural henna). Warning about “black henna”.
  • Links to the henna templates and the photo editor. Ad code unchanged.
v44
  • New: “Size & script style” on all name pages (153 spellings): minimum height and width for six script styles, measured on rendered letterforms (narrowest gap between letters, thinnest stroke).
  • Adjustable assumptions (line / gap in mm); all values are explicitly guide values, not a guarantee.
  • Warnings when letters almost touch in a style or strokes are very fine.
  • German and English only for now. Ad code unchanged.
v43
  • Bug fixed: on German letter and name pages the pronunciation hint was in English (“long a, often carries the hamza”). The German text now appears.
  • New on all letter and name pages in all 13 languages: pronunciation in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), e.g. [ʕ] for Ain. Languages without their own pronunciation text show only the phonetic notation instead of foreign-language text.
  • Check tool extended: flags English pronunciation text on non-English pages.
v42
  • Ads: one fixed, clearly labelled “Advertisement” slot at the end of content pages (letters, names, common mistakes, henna). Auto ads, anchor and full-screen ads are switched off in the account — nothing floats over the content or sticks to the screen edge.
  • While no ad has loaded (ad blocker, declined consent) the slot stays invisible: no label, no line.
  • Check tool extended: exactly one ad slot per content page, none on tool, legal and error pages.
  • Bug fixed: on name pages the page could be scrolled sideways on phones because the style picker of the name card was wider than the screen.
v41
  • Name pages: new section “The name, letter by letter” — calculated for every name from its Arabic spelling: the form of each letter in its position, the number of connected script blocks, dots, places where the script deliberately breaks, and look-alike risks. In all 13 languages.
  • Ads on name pages only when the Arabic spelling is verified; pages with a merely guessed transliteration stay ad-free.
  • New check tool _dev/compliance_check.py: after every release it tests that ads run only on content pages, ads.txt is correct and legal, tool and error pages stay ad-free (the _dev folder is blocked via .htaccess).
v40
  • Tattoo preview: four new looks — “Medallion”, “Kufic grid”, “Mihrab” (frames around the name) and “House script” (slanted, stretched, with a pen swash). Frames can also be picked on their own via “Frame”; 🎲 now rolls frames and house-script strokes too.
  • New in fine-tuning: slant, stretch and swash. All of it acts on the already-joined text image, so letter connections always stay intact.
  • “Exact values”: size, rotation and position (in %) as number fields, plus “Reset size & position”. Frames and swash also appear in the stencil (black on transparent).
  • The editor script is now loaded with the version number, so a stale browser cache cannot interfere after an upload.
v39
  • Consent switched to Google’s certified consent management platform (CMP) — a prerequisite for Google serving ads in the EU, the UK and Switzerland. The own banner is gone (can be re-enabled any time via the AL_CMP switch in inc/data.php).
  • In the footer of pages with ads, “Cookie and advertising settings” opens Google’s dialog to change or withdraw consent; on all other pages the link leads to the privacy policy.
  • Privacy policy updated: new section on consent management (what is transmitted when the Google script loads, legal bases, withdrawal) and a revised cookie section.
v38
  • AdSense verification: google-adsense-account meta tag on all pages (loads nothing from Google and sets no cookie), so Google can match the site even without the ad script loaded.
v37
  • Google AdSense set up (publisher ID added, ads.txt added). Ads appear only on content pages (letters, names, mistakes guide, henna) — never on the home page, tools with input or photos, imprint, privacy and error pages.
  • Consent reworked: without consent the browser does not connect to Google and no cookie is set. “Decline” and “Accept” look the same. The banner is now a compact card at the bottom instead of a block pushing content down, and appears only on pages with ads.
  • Privacy policy: detailed Google AdSense section (purposes, data, retention, third-country transfer, legal basis, withdrawal) plus a settings box inside the policy; “Cookie and advertising settings” in every footer leads there.
  • No more empty placeholder boxes: without consent or without an ad the space stays completely empty.
v36
  • Tattoo preview editor reworked: the privacy note now sits directly under the photo upload, where the question “is my photo safe?” arises.
  • Four numbered steps (1 photo, 2 name, 3 look, 4 fine-tune) guide you through the editor — the controls themselves are unchanged.
  • New: six ready-made looks (Classic, Henna, Kufic, Gold, Thuluth, White) set script, colour, ink, curve and tilt in one click and can be reverted with Undo.
  • New: “Roll” creates a random look calculated from the entered name (deterministic, a new variant on every click) — first building block of the planned name-to-artwork generator.
v35
  • Fixed two wrong transliterations on the homepage: "Leon" showed لن (the word "will not") instead of ليون, "Noah" showed نواه instead of نوح — the external transliteration engine got exactly these two names wrong, even though the correct spelling already existed in the site's own name dictionary.
  • Cause: the "Popular searches" tiles on the homepage query the external engine live instead of using the site's own verified dictionary — the same gap already seen with "Salah". Fixed via the same correction mechanism that overrides the engine's answer for known problem cases before display.
  • Verified: both names tested live against the homepage, 195-page regression suite still passes cleanly.
v34
  • Real dark mode for the whole site — follows the device's system setting automatically (no toggle, no saved setting, no extra JavaScript). Covers every card, input field and menu.
  • Dark-mode text contrast checked individually by calculation (WCAG contrast formula), not just by eye — buttons, letter-confusion chips and badges stay clearly legible in both color schemes.
  • The print view (certificate, art preview) deliberately always stays on white paper, regardless of the screen's color scheme.
  • Verified: 195-page regression suite still passes cleanly, dark and light mode visually compared (screenshots) on the homepage, letters overview and a letter detail page, light mode pixel-identical to the version before this change.
v33
  • "Easy to confuse" on all 31 letter pages is now letter-specific instead of the same ب/ت/ث statement everywhere: real, linguistically accurate confusion groups (dot families like ب/ت/ث/ن/ي, stroke-shape pairs like ا/ل/ك, word-end look-alikes like ة/ه and ى/ي) with direct links to each matching letter — more depth, more internal linking, no two pages with identical body text anymore.
  • FAQ with rich-results markup added to the Decompose, Photo-Preview, Henna and Human-Review pages — previously the only 4 of 15 main pages without FAQPage schema. For Henna the content already existed in full in all 13 languages, just not wired into the shared accordion/schema format — no new translation needed, just properly connected.
  • Verified: full 195-page regression suite still passes cleanly, FAQPage schema checked on all 4 pages in German, English and Arabic, each of the 31 letter confusion groups checked individually against standard Arabic script rules.
v32
  • WebSite and Organization structured data added to every page — the prerequisite for Google's sitelinks search box right under the search result, and for the brand logo in the Knowledge Panel.
  • The search action reuses the already-existing name search (?q= on /names, which server-side redirects straight to the matching name page) — no new feature, just made visible to Google for the first time.
  • Verified: both new blocks checked against Google's required fields, full 195-page regression suite still passes cleanly.
v31
  • Pretty addresses (arabic-letters.com/fr/names instead of .../index.php?p=fr/names) are now live — the cause was simply a missing .htaccess file on the server (many FTP clients hide dot-files by default and then never upload them). Confirmed after re-upload: brand-new addresses like /ar/henna load correctly right away.
  • Old, already-indexed technical addresses now permanently redirect (301) to the new pretty address, so no ranking value is lost.
  • robots.txt points back to /sitemap.xml (now reachable) instead of yesterday's temporary /sitemap.php workaround.
  • Tested with a purpose-built local reconstruction of the server's rewrite behavior (previously impossible, since the local test environment ignores .htaccess entirely): all 195 pages across all 13 languages, 40 random addresses out of the new sitemap's 3,237, the legacy redirect, and the text-check feature (which must deliberately NOT redirect when functional parameters are present) — all green.
v30
  • Found and fixed a critical SEO bug (see README for the full derivation from the Google Search Console data): every single canonical tag and all 3,237 sitemap URLs pointed to "pretty" addresses (e.g. /fr/names) that don't actually load on the live server — only the technical address (index.php?p=fr/names) really works there. That told Google, on every single page, "the real version is one that doesn't exist." Canonical tags and the sitemap now point exclusively to the address proven to load.
  • robots.txt now points to /sitemap.php instead of /sitemap.xml, since the latter was unreachable for the same reason (the rewrite rule is inactive on the live server).
  • A single switch (AL_PRETTY_LIVE in inc/i18n.php) now controls pretty URLs for the entire site at once — once the host fixes the server-side rewrite issue, flipping that one switch is all that's needed.
v29
  • The social-media preview image is now available in all 13 languages instead of just German/English — sharing a link in Turkish, Russian, Arabic and so on now shows a properly worded image in that language instead of the English fallback.
  • Added new FAQ sections (with matching search-engine data) on the "Typing" and "Common mistakes" pages — three real visitor questions each.
  • Fixed a bug (found in passing while building the FAQ sections, present since the FAQ feature was first introduced): the "Frequently asked questions" heading was untranslated in 8 of 13 languages and silently showed English on Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Malay and Arabic pages.
  • Ran an image audit: every embedded font is actually used (no dead downloads), the large text-recognition bundle is confirmed to still load only on the photo page and only on demand — only the new preview images were losslessly recompressed (a small saving, but a free one).
v28
  • Completely redesigned the header navigation: 9 cramped side-by-side links became "Check text | Tools ▾ | Shop" — the 8 tools now live in a dropdown with their own icon (a single Arabic letter) and a short description per tile, plus a highlighted callout for "Common mistakes".
  • The language switcher now has a fixed spot in the header and no longer wraps onto an orphaned row at narrower widths.
  • Phones now get a dedicated menu icon (turns into an X when opened) with a clean slide-down panel, replacing the old, too-tightly-packed link list.
  • Fixed a bug (caught before release, never live): in Arabic (right-to-left), the new tools menu rendered shifted and partly off-screen — its centering was tied to a fixed direction instead of the text direction.
v27
  • Introduced a visible version number and this changelog.
  • Added a favicon, app icon and social-media preview image (Open Graph image) — previously any shared link showed a blank preview.
  • Added structured data (breadcrumbs) for Typing, Breakdown, Preview editor, Henna know-how, Human review, Common mistakes, Imprint and Privacy.
  • Fixed a bug where the "Common mistakes" page title showed the domain name twice.
v26
  • Added a new "Common mistakes" page with five real, live-checked comparison examples.
  • Added four previously missing pages to sitemap.php.
v25
  • Added a welcome tour for first-time visitors on the homepage and in the tattoo editor.
v24
  • Fixed a bug where the Couple page result could differ from the live preview.
v23
  • Live preview with suggestions now on every input field on every page.
  • Digit cheat-sheet added to every page with text input.
  • Made the homepage hero more compact; added transparent stencil export to the tattoo editor.
v22
  • Completely removed server-side photo upload: text recognition now runs entirely in the browser (WebAssembly/Tesseract.js) — no visitor image ever reaches the server.
  • New tattoo preview editor: place your own lettering onto a photo of skin, a wall or an object, with free choice of style, size, rotation and color.
